I thank the queer gods for Chappell Roan.
Firstly, her debut LP is perfection. From melodies, lyrics, production, themes, drama, softness, camp, cool - I can’t fault it.
I love how queer it is and how queer she is. I love that she brings a fresh perspective; she is a mighty woman, a force to be reckoned with, a star.
When I listen to her music, I am taken back to my twenties, when I heard Lady Gaga’s Poker Face for the first time - and somehow, I felt seen and safe to find myself in her music.
As an artist looking to re-enter the music industry, it feels good to know that someone with power and privilege is calling out the downsides of fame, which are, it seems to me, rooted in greed, power, misogyny and capitalism.
The unfair criticism she is currently facing as a woman for speaking out is a testament to that.
I hope the boundaries she rightfully asserts are respected and she continues to make music for as long as she wants.
